Repairing Coloured Leaded Lights and Metal Frames in a Church – Hoylake

12th January 2016

Mr Williams, St. Catherine’s Church, Hoylake, Wirral

Some 25 to 30 years ago K.G. Bell reglazed St. Catherine’s, Hoylake completely with new leaded lights. During the summer of 2015 K.G. Bell carried out extensive refurbishment of the church lead lights. This work was due to general wear and tear, vandalism, and lack of routine maintenance.

The refurbishment work included, removing sections of lead lights from a number of windows due to ‘bowing’, rebuilding them with new lead but using the existing glass, to ensure colour matching wherever possible. This work included inserting brass supporting rods to prevent future ‘bowing’ of the units.
The main front elevation of the church lead lights required extensive work. This included removing four metal opening frames which were badly corroded, two of which were discarded and replaced with new sections of lead lights matching the original glass etc. The remaining two opening frames where rebuilt and replaced to provide adequate ventilation. In addition a number of sections of the lead lights were removed and refurbished, which involved the use of external scaffolding. Where possible the original glass was reused. Any new glass used was matched in colour and pattern as close as possible to the original.

All this work was carried out with due consideration for parishioners who attended masses during the refurbishment, also for the safety of staff and pupils of the school which adjoins the church, which necessitated working on Saturdays. The site was always left clean and tidy between visits.

We would strongly recommend K.G. Bell for the professional way in which they carried out this work at St. Catherine’s, the end result being extremely satisfactory.
