Athenaeum Liverpool stained glass window

The Athenaeum club, Liverpool

The Athenaeum club in Liverpool, less than a stone’s throw from the Blue Coat Chambers, has a prestigious history to match its luxurious surroundings.

K. G. Bell Ltd was commissioned to create bespoke stained leaded lights using patterned glass and install them above the Newsroom bar.

The “A” and head design, logos of the Athenaeum, were provided and K.G Bell created the leaded stained glass panes to replace the existing plain patterned glass.

The Athenaeum was founded in 1797 to “facilitate access to information and knowledge”. The Newsroom provided a place where the growing professional class of the rapidly expanding port could read a regular supply of newspapers and pamphlets from across the country in more comfortable surroundings than one of the city’s many overcrowded coffee houses.

Since the early 19th century the Athenaeum Newsroom has been the “most splendid room of its kind in Liverpool” and the addition of the stained glass compliments and enhances the traditional style of the room.
